Sarah Burton is Givenchy’s new Creative Director
While New York Fashion Week is running, we receive news that Sarah Burton has been confirmed as Creative Director at LVMH-owned Givenchy after spending her entire career at Alexander McQueen.
Once thought of as the diligent one, the silent one, the reliable power behind the dazzle of Alexander McQueen, after Alexander McQueen's death, she took the helm of the brand and has emerged as a person with a devastating muse of her own. Season after season, she produces beautiful collections, keeping the soul of the brand ready-to-wear with the appeal of couture.
McQueen was the destination for special occasion dresses that were truly standouts. We were honestly disappointed when the Kering group let her go to replace her with a Creative Director with a streetwear vision.
“Sarah Burton is an exceptional creative talent whose work I have passionately followed for many years,” Sidney Toledano, chairman of the Givenchy board, said in a statement. “Her unique vision and approach to fashion will be invaluable to this iconic Maison, known for its audacity and haute couture. I am convinced that her creative leadership will contribute to the future success and international standing of the Maison.”
Burton’s hire is significant not only because she’s taking on a role that McQueen himself held from 1996 to 2001. Burton becomes one of just five women to hold a creative director title at an LVMH house, alongside Maria Grazia Chiuri for Dior, Camille Miceli for Pucci, and Silvia Fendi.
We look forward to seeing her magic back at work, with her first show being in March 2025.
